Before choosing a fragrance for your home, ask yourself something:
How do I want to feel here?
Maybe you need a fresh start after a long week. A warm welcome when you walk through the door. Or a little separation between the workday and your evening, especially when both happen under the same roof.
We spend a lot of time thinking about how our homes look. How they feel deserves some attention, too.
Sometimes you’re choosing a memory
Have you ever caught a familiar scent and immediately thought of someone you love? Or remembered a place you hadn’t thought about in years?
Research has found that scent-triggered memories can feel especially emotional compared with memories prompted by sights or sounds. That familiar fragrance can bring back more than a scene. It can bring back the feeling of being there.
Maybe it’s something cooking that reminds you of childhood summer nights in the neighborhood. Or a fresh, salty scent that takes you back to a grown-woman adventure, trying new foods somewhere far from your everyday responsibilities.
For me, citrus brings back Playa del Carmen: fresh fruit, drinks, the sea, and sometimes that unmistakable, pungent sargassum washed ashore. Not every vacation smell is pretty, but it’s still part of the memory.
Then there’s Sorrento, where I got to experience limoncello being made near lemon groves during my Mediterranean cruise. The citron notes in Golden Time of Day take me back to those warm evenings.
Your memories will be different. That’s what makes choosing fragrance personal.
Start with the feeling, not the rules
A scent doesn’t come with one emotional response attached. Even the way a fragrance is described can influence how pleasant we find it. Our expectations are part of the experience.
So consider these starting points, not instructions:
For a fresh start: Explore citrus or green notes in your entryway or home office. Choose something that smells bright and inviting to you.
For a slower evening: Try soft florals or gentle woods in the bedroom. Think about what you’d enjoy around you while reading or getting ready for bed.
For a warm welcome: Consider amber or softly sweet notes in the living room, somewhere friends can get comfortable and the conversation doesn’t have to end early.
There’s no need to buy a different fragrance for every room. Start with one space and something you genuinely enjoy.
What about scent and winding down?
Lavender often comes up in conversations about aromatherapy. Some small studies of inhaled lavender essential oil have found improvements in aspects of sleep, but the overall evidence is still uncertain. Those findings also aren’t proof that a lavender-scented home fragrance will improve sleep.
What I can share is my own experience: I keep Oud Noir Fabric Mist on my nightstand. That smoky lavender and oud feels soothing to me and reminds me of walking into a beautiful hotel or spa with a distinct scent.
It’s part of my evening, not a promise about yours.
Start light, follow the product directions, and consider anyone sharing your space. The goal is something you enjoy being around, not a room you can barely breathe in.
Make it a pleasure, not another assignment
Y’all, we don’t need to turn enjoying our homes into another thing to be good at.
Put on some Jill Scott. Get comfortable. Let the laundry wait while you enjoy a few minutes that nobody else gets to claim.
Maybe your favorite scent reminds you of a summer evening in Chicago. Maybe it brings someone you miss a little closer. Or maybe you simply like it, and that’s enough.
